Our Founder, Dr. Desh Bandhu Gupta, aspired to build quality healthcare as a right for all. He believed that scientific excellence is imperative to expand access to affordable healthcare. This relentless drive to pursue a single dream led to the formation of a company that would go on to impact several lives through affordable, accessible healthcare.
After completing his post-graduate studies in science, Dr. Gupta chose a path that went beyond academia. While teaching at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Pilani, Rajasthan, he recognized the urgent need to translate scientific knowledge into practical solutions for public health.
From its very inception, Lupin was envisioned as a company that would place community health at its core. Lupin started operations as a manufacturer of vitamins and soon started producing drugs to combat tuberculosis.
Lupin’s first manufacturing facility focused on producing iron and folic acid tablets for the Indian Government’s flagship maternal and child health program. These early efforts laid the foundation for what Lupin continues to stand for today: Science-led innovation guided by compassion, purpose, and commitment to improving lives.
I have the conviction that only by doing selfless service to the needy and the poorest of the poor, one can achieve a true sense of satisfaction and happiness; the highest purpose of life.
Guided by this belief, Lupin’s commitment to social responsibility took an institutional form with the establishment of the Lupin Foundation. Lupin Human Welfare and Research Foundation is dedicated to rural development and community well-being, translating our founder’s philosophy of selfless service into a sustained movement.
The Lupin flower grows even in harsh conditions and enriches the soil around it. Inspired by its resilience and selfless nature, Dr. Gupta envisioned a company catering to others, addressing unmet medical needs despite on-ground challenges.
DBG founded Lupin in 1968 with the help of INR 5,000 borrowed from his wife, Manju Gupta, who is currently the chairperson.
The Government of India entrusted Lupin with supplying iron and folic acid tablets for its mother and child healthcare program. This was Lupin’s first major order and a foundation for the future.
Lupin started with only two employees: a peon-cum-packer and a part-time typist. This is a powerful reminder of how great things grow from the simplest beginnings.
